Dunce Quote

Heaven forbid that a company might want to do the responsible thing, and actually PAY BACK, its government bailout.  You'd think that the morons that pass for the press, would be jumping for joy that some evil bank is doing what should be done. But not this TV talking head, no sirreebob!

"I'm worried if you think if [Goldman-Sachs paying back its federal loan early is] a good thing. Are they doing this because of financial stability or might they be talking about that, simply to get out from under the thumb of the federal government and be allowed to go back to running the business the way they want to run it as opposed to the way the government wants them to run it?" --NBC's Matt Lauer

Get Ready on Another Front

In a piece found at Yahoo, organizers of the UFCW, are trying to thug their way into Walmart. It seems to me that these folks are just not happy with paying lower prices, and feel that Walmart doesn't charge enough for the goods and services it provides and they just HAVE to have a union to jack up the prices.

Of course all of this is in anticipation of the Cardcheck Bill that is working its way through the halls of corruption formerly known as Congress.

Just an added thought, if these folks are so keen on being able to identify who did and did not vote for a union then why are said same scared to death of being required to prove who you are when you're voting in a local, state or national election for political office?

Perhaps workers can register a few times a la ACORN, and we'll see folks like Mick Jagger, or, Sup R Mann, voting to non-unionize.

Paducah Tea Party

It is my hope to have a running and continous blog/posting later today of the Tea Party in my area. I am going to take my laptop and, hopefully, give an on the spot commentary whenever possible.  There are a lot of hotspots in my area and along the route of the party.  However let me start off with the begining of what might become a photo-essay-commentary.

My Wish List or Things That I Doubt I Will Live to See in My Livetime

Wish Number One A government program that actually accomplishes what it was designed to do, and then is dismantled.

Wish Number Two The Kum-by-ya crowd actually finding out, the hard way, that the world is truly an evil place.

Wish Number Three After the above group wakes up, they actually decide that they can really represent the little man, with more credibility by defending this nation, cut spending to reasonable, affordable levels, and let go of the reins of power by allowing the free market system to work.

Wish Number Four Renouncing Socialism; yeah a bit tougher for the aforementioned crowd but we could put in place a 12 step program to help ease them along.

Wish Number Five The Continued existence of Israel. First, they will be betrayed, and then destroyed. I do believe that this fine nation is coming to a messy finish and confrontation with Islam. Moreover, while I feel they will become militarily victorious, they will be shunned as a pariah by all the “right thinking” nations of the world, resulting in sanctions similar to those against South Africa, and will be left to wither on the vine.

Wish Number Six The rise of an Islamic reformation, wherein some really courageous Muslim nails (a la Martin Luther) a list of demands on the Mullahs door, and condemning them for hijacking his beliefs. Of course said Muslim lives mere seconds afterwards. Perhaps he can make a statement with a suicide belt immediately after nailing the aforementioned demands. Talk about martyrs.

Compulsory National Service? Bring Back the Draft Instead

I know that there is going to be some backlash to this idea, but I ask all my fellow conservative brethren to hear me out on what I am proposing.

To get to my point I must first remind the reader of a couple of propositions put forth by the Democrats and President Obama.

Point one - While on the campaign trail in 2008 President Obama had proposed the establishment of a National Security Force equal to the US Military. Recently we have also witnessed his call, for lack of a better term “compulsory volunteerism” aka Americorp, or as many of my fellow conservatives have called it “The Obama Youth”.

This idea scares the bejeebers out of me and many other people I have spoken to when talking about the above subject. The idea of a “National” force answerable the President, smacks of events that happened well over a half a century ago just prior to WWII.

Point two - A couple of years ago, (or less) Congressman Rangel of NY had suggested that we reinstitute the draft. His reasoning was that it would make America’s entire youth serve in the military and in his view would not make any war a “Rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight”

Ok so here I am making a proposal of my own. Since the idea of a national security forces sounds extremely frightening, I am going to suggest that the US brings back the draft.

While I am not proposing turning our nation’s youth into cannon fodder, I am suggesting that this would serve to do three things at the same time.

One - It would preempt any plan for a national security force and quite possibly eliminate the need for the Americorp.

Two - The military builds character. It builds loyalty to our nation as those that are in it are sworn to UPHOLD the constitution, which the left has seemingly decided the American public can do without and is no longer really necessary.

Three - By increasing the size of the US Military we can stimulate the economy. Let’s face it, these new personnel will need uniforms, weapons, bases, food, and other items related to the running of a complete military. The industries needed to supply all of these things would bolster spin-off industries, such as trucking companies, railroads, heck the stuff needs to be delivered no?

Now I know many of you are sitting back aghast, but given the choice between a fascist Obama Youth and the US Military, who would rather have looking out for you?

A Sure Winner

This, is sure to work. What could possibly go wrong?  A governor of a state♠ that at one point couldn't even pay refunds to its own citizens is going to run health care.

♠According to a government watchdog group this problem really started back in 2004, when Repbulicans in the KS legislature had proposed two items be put into place during the budget talks.

One was the recomendation that a spending cap of 5% be put into place, whcih would control government spending.  The second recomendation was the creation of a stablization fund, (sort of a rainy day fund), that would have placed a certain percentage of ALL tax revenues into a speacial account to be used for just such an emergency which now faces the state's fiscal woes.

NIETEHR were acted upon, and all was hunky dorry until the begining of the economic slowdown starting in 2008, wherein tax revenues, (due to less comsumers purchasing items), did not keep up with government spending.

In 2006 the state had nearly a billion dollars in surplus revenue in the bank, and it is now, thanks to spending like drunken sailors about 200 million in the hole.

What the Repbulicans are trying to do is to get these fiscally responsible ideas placed into the budget for 2009, so that a repeat of this situation does NOT happen again.

This painting of GOP as being evil because they won't go along with the plan to rob Peter to pay Paul, is nothing more than a MSM ploy.

The Not So Stimulating Stimulus Bill

By now pretty much all the US of A, have been put on notice that the tax cuts for the “working class” will amount to a whole $677.00/year¨ , or roughly a $1.86 a day. Wow, I can really stimulate the economy with that windfall now can’t I?

I did a bit of thinking as to what exactly will this extra cash in our wallets will buy us and came to the conclusion, after just a wee bit of research on everyday expenses, that, well, it’s not a whole lot of anything, when you come down to it.

Gasoline:

According to AAA,(as of this writing), the cheapest price for a gallon of regular is $1.72 in Wyoming, while the most expensive is 2.50 in Alaska. So I did a little math work, and by adding all the prices and dividing I came out to 1.1744/gallon. Now remember that is the cheap stuff, but ok, so it might buy you one gallon of gas per day. However one must remember that the price of gas has been bouncing like a yoyo, so what it might get you today, might not get you tomorrow.

Public/Mass Transit: §

A) Taxicabs - According to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission it costs 2.50 to just enter a cab and an $0.40/additional unit. A unit being described as;

The unit fare is:

one-fifth of a mile, when the taxicab is traveling at 6 miles an hour or more; or

60 seconds when not in motion or traveling at less than 12 miles per hour.

The taximeter shall combine fractional measures of distance and time in accruing a unit of fare. Any combination of distance or time shall be computed by the taximeter in accordance with the National Bureau of Standards.

The fare shall include pre-assessment of the unit currently being accrued; the amount due may therefore include a full unit charge for a final, fractional unit.

Night surcharge of $.50 after 8:00 PM & before 6:00 AM

Peak hour Weekday Surcharge of $1.00 Monday - Friday after 4:00 PM & before 8:00 PM

There are of course flat rates for airports and the likes, but it is doubtful that your stimulus tax decrease will buy you more than a courtesy look at a cabbie.

B) Subways and Buses:

The current price for a one way ride is $2.00 for a bus or subway train. Express bus service (these service areas that are not reached by the basic bus/subway lines) is $5.00 per ride. There are various discounts such as weekly, and monthly rides known as Metro Card. However while they save you a few pennies on the dollar, you’re not saving a whole lot more than the buck eighty six you’re getting each day.

C) Commuter Lines:

Since I am a former Long Islander I will use the LIRR as a sample. To be sure there are various other lines such as Metro-North, and the PATH lines not to mention Bus routes that service the long distance traveler. I will also use my own commute as an example since that is, or actually was, more familiar with on a daily basis.

When I lived in Shirley NY, I was paying around $80.00 per week for the joy of commuting to my job in Jamaica NY. (Please click on the above link, for an updated fare schedule). Now for those that didn’t work in the city, but on occasion took the LIRR for trips to the City (as we Lon Guylanders called it) one was paying about $13.00 for a ONE WAY ticket. IF you did not have the time to purchase a ticket at the ATVM or it wasn’t working, you paid a penalty fee of a couple of extra dollars. (Ah got to love those government monopolies!). So a night on the town, or a day at the ballpark, a trip to the museum had to have traveling fees factored into the bigger picture.

Either way your measly extra 13 week will barely purchase you a ride. Now to be honest the fares are based on the actual distance you live from NYC, so the closer you lived to NYC the less you paid, but even from a station called Floral Park which is just outside of the NYC border is still about half of your tax saving.

Please also make note that many commuters also had to board a subway or bus once they even made into NYC, so if you factor in the additional fare, well you get the picture.

D) Housing and Utilities:

According to a chart based on the DOE figures, the average monthly residential electric bill is 95.66. I am certain your 52 bucks will go towards that necessary item. If you scroll down the chart you see the rates are even higher (of course), for business and industrial customers.

Moving along to heating, a rather important need if you live in one of our northern states.

In an article from the Boston Globe, written August 04, 2008, a grim prediction was made for MA residents for the, then coming year of 2009, of which I quote;

“Heating costs are expected to keep rising, the report says. The state's average household oil bill next year could top $3,000, according to the report by the UMass Donahue Institute, a university think tank. All told, consumers can expect to spend $4.45 billion for gas and oil heat in 2009 - a $469 million increase from 2008.”

Now to be fair MA does indeed have a rather high Cost of Living (COLA), but this just points out that your annual $677.00 bucks aren’t going to warm your house all that much, if at all. You can wager the farm that your savings is going towards that bill as well.

Housing is a big chunk of anyone’s COLA, and it does vary a lot from cities to more rural areas, but the point here is to see how far your extra money goes, and for most areas it doesn’t buy you a lot of bang for your buck.

Sadly the most recent US Census report I could find was based on a 2003 survey and issued in 2004, a lifetime ago all things considered. For some unexplained reason when one clicks on the link provided at that site it at firsts opens a PDF file, and then closes down the window. However I am taking the report at it’s word and well now just look at those figures, based on a five year old survey! A little past 700/month for homeowners, and just around 650 for renters. Yup that money is sure going to go far.

I suppose I could go on and on about what all of this surplus cash that each of us will have is not going to stimulate much of anything let alone the economy. In fact when questioned I would be willing to bet that those of us will just use the extra few dollars to do our daily routines.

Somehow it will stimulate government coffers, with the exception of rents and mortgages, as it seems that most of us will as I mentioned above will be paying bills that have taxes included in those bills. Or will be using it purchase daily needed items that likewise have taxes attached to them as well. WOW, being able to buy a tad bit more of what I need to survive daily really is just giving me a tingle up my leg.

BTW, a few more things (luxury items indeed), that 1.86/day won’t buy you are;

A pack of smokes

A bottle of beer

A happy meal for the kid

A morning cup of java, and a buttered roll or bagel

But, all in all, I am really stoked about getting all this extra money that I’ll be able to put to good use somewhere, someplace, sometime,,, at least one time. I hope all of you enjoy yours as well.

¨ BTW, just a little side note, I would suggest that those that haven’t already, might want to reassess their tax liability/dependent status, and claim absolutely 0, because as you know you’re now making 677.00 more per year and by NEXT year the Tax cuts put into place by President Bush will expire, thereby raising your liability and will effectively cancel out this huge sum of money.

§ Writers note;

All fares about from the Mass Transit section were based on figures from the NYC MTA. I cannot answer for what other fares might be in other large cities. I can say that here in the rural area of western KY where I live now, there is virtually no mass transit to speak of per se, but there is a system in my town called PATS, which charges 0.75 for a bus ride. However they do have a limited schedule and only a handful of actual routes. Still on the plus side my $1.86/day would get me just slightly over 3 rides a day.

This is Just Asinine

I usually take a sabbatical after every election cycle to focus more on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. I might add here that I work for the USPS, and as such this is our rather busy season and most of my time is spent working and sleeping. However, this article just ticked me off to no end.

Apparently, the enviroMENTAList NAZI’s have gotten their own little most wanted list similar to the FBI. It seems big brother is very much on the horizon

In particular, I loved this little tidbit;

“Also at large are the father and son team of Carlos and Allesandro Giordano, who were arrested in 2003 as the owners of Autodelta USA, a company that was illegally importing and selling Alfa Romeos that did not meet U.S. emission or safety standards.”

Ok so as a conservative I should be all about the rule of law etc., but this is just plain, well stupid! The do-gooders should only be so concerned about the importation of illicit drugs as they are about the importation of automobiles.

The Tax Shell Game

Hurry, hurry, hurry, step right up and guess which tax-pea is under the walnut shell! Come one, come one come all! (hint, the game has no wrong answers)

If you guessed all the shells you’re a winner, or a loser depending on how you view it.

As I mentioned in a previous article taxing the rich is a utopian pipe dream. In the piece I said;

“How soon will it be before 75k is a threshold or 50k becomes the cut off point? “

Well it could be a lot faster than I had anticipated. In a piece written by James Taranto and dated October 23, 2008, that same prediction may just become a reality. Although perhaps not in the same way I had figured, but all the same the 250,000k threshold is substantially lowered. This is almost beyond belief.

“Ghilarducci outlined her plan last year in a paper for the left-liberal Economic Policy Institute, in which she acknowledges that her plan would amount to a tax increase on workers making more than $75,000--considerably less than the $250,000 Barack Obama has said would be his tax-hike cutoff.”

 On a related note an accounting friend of mine has informed me that the tax code will have some new regulations added to it due to the bail out. Now, with this I will go on here to predict that there will not be any visible tax increase in 2009. Oh no, it will be subtle. New tax codes, perhaps new ways of determining what constitutes not only wealth but what constitutes income. Also remember that we are really only a year away from the expiration of the Bush Tax Cuts wherein every one of us will have an automatic tax increase as the rates go back to levels during the President Clinton era.

So do you really think you’re getting that nice tax break?

It's Lights Out for Coal Industry

I got his link in an email. If you don't still don't believe that Senator Obama is going to destroy this economy then listen to this interview in which he responds about the use of coal as an energy source.

Dimished Returns

The election hasn't even happened yet and those on the left are already dumbing down their expectations.

In an interview with a Colorado radio station, Mr Obama appeared to be engaged already in expectation lowering. Asked about his goals for the first hundred days, he said he would need more time to tackle such big and costly issues as health care reform, global warming and Iraq. “The first hundred days is going to be important, but it’s probably going to be the first thousand days that makes the difference,” he said. He has also been reminding crowds in recent days how “hard” it will be to achieve his goals, and that it will take time."
